SCALE OF THE ISSUE

Annually, around 18,500 to 20,000 young people age out of U.S. foster care without permanent housing. Within the first year after aging out, approximately 50% become homeless. Within four years of leaving foster care, about 20–25% of these former foster youth experience homelessness. Between ages 17 and 21, roughly 11–36% of youth who age out of foster care report experiencing homelessness.
